2024-12-03 The Jockeys Accident Fund Company Limited by Guarantee (JAF) was established to promote and support the health, safety and welfare of jockeys, and provides benefits for professional jockeys and apprentices who are injured either during a race meeting or in the schooling of horses.

The JAF wishes to invite tenders for the provision of physiotherapy/sports therapy & related services at racetracks throughout Ireland as described in Appendices I & II to this document.

This tender process is an open procedure, and any services contract awarded will be for the period from 1 March 2025 to 31 December 2026 (with an option to extend for a further 2 years).

The successful tenderer(s) shall be registered with CORU or other appropriate professional body for the term of any services contract offered, and shall be required to provide proof of registration.

The successful tenderer(s) shall also be required to have appropriate Professional Indemnity Insurance in place, and any other relevant insurances in place such as employers’ liability insurance or public liability insurance, for the term of any services contract offered.

The successful tenderer(s) shall, during the term of any services contract offered, be required to immediately advise the JAF of any changes to its insurance status, produce proof of current premiums paid upon request, and produce valid certificates of insurance upon request.

Tenderers may be required to make a presentation of the proposals contained in their tender. The JAF will not be responsible for any costs incurred by the tenderer(s) related to any such presentations.

All tender prices quoted must be all inclusive (i.e. including but not limited to professional fee, V.A.T, travel costs & expenses, professional supplies & consumables, and any other ancillary costs) and must be quoted in Euro.

Tenderers must confirm that all prices quoted will remail valid for the period 1 March 2025 to 31 December 2026.

Requirements & Specifications:
The following services shall be provided by the Physiotherapist/Sports Therapist to the JAF:

On track physio services at selected racecourses including:
  • Acute sports injury assessments
  • Sports injury treatments
  • Rehabilitation and maintenance programmes

Qualifications and experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Charted Physiotherapy, Athletic Therapy or equivalent Sports Therapy
  • CORU registration or a fully Certified member of Athletic Rehabilitation Therapy Ireland or other appropriate professional body
  • A post-graduate qualification in sports physiotherapy or musculoskeletal physiotherapy or sports science or strength and conditioning
  • A minimum of three years post graduate experience with elite sports people.
Desirable
  • Physiotherapy, Athletic Therapy or S+C rehabilitation experience with a jockey population
Key responsibilities
  • Provision of race day therapy to include:
    • Pre-race preparation of riders
    • Continuation of rehabilitation for riders returning from injury
    • Maintenance of chronic issues
    • Acute injury assessment alongside Irish Horse Regulatory Board (IHRB) Medical Officer.
  • Proficient in all sports therapy techniques for example, sports massage/manipulation, ultrasound, taping, dry needling
  • Proficient in recording of clinical notes
  • Liaising with IHRB Medical Officer on race day
  • Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer of the IHRB as clinical lead
  • Communication with colleagues within the on-course team
  • Communication with physiotherapy and strength and conditioning team in Irish Injured Jockey Clinic in RACE, Kildare
  • Communication where necessary with the wider Jockey Pathway team, to include nutritionist, sports psychologist, career guidance coach and jockey coaching team
  • Provide educational opportunities where appropriate to jockeys
Key requirements
  • Proof of indemnity to treat Professional Athletes.
  • Full driver’s licence.
  • Availability to work at appointed racecourses throughout Ireland.
  • Availability to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, Bank Holidays, Easter & Christmas race meetings, with flexibility around rescheduled race meetings when they occur.
