CV Tips

Your curriculum vitae, your résumé, your employment record, or your CV. Whatever you call it there is no denying its importance. It is how you introduce yourself to potential employers and it is how you promote yourself so if you are looking to join the workforce or change jobs, a good CV is an invaluable tool. Outlined below are some tips to help you prepare a CV that will allow you to get your nose ahead.

Personal and Contact Details – Avoid a silly or rude email address, keep it simple with just your name e.g. joe.bloggs123@email.com. If that means that you have to create a new email address then so be it, creating a good impression is important

Education and Qualifications – List the schools and years you've attended. Also include any other training or courses you have completed

Include a small explanation for any gaps in employment

When sending your CV, include a short cover letter, telling the employer why you are interested in the job and what relevant experience you have

Try to keep your CV to 2-3 pages in length

Make sure your contact details are correct – phone number and email address in particular

Work Experience  - Briefly describe the jobs that you have had – tasks, responsibilities, ideas or initiatives that you have introduced

Format your CV so it is easy to read and looks professional – double check for spelling and grammar mistakes

Don’t send your CV before reading and editing it, or have someone proof read it for you

Relevant skills – Outline the skills you possess that you believe would be of benefit to the role you are applying for

Achievements  - Outline any key achievements in any previous roles, anything you have done that you are proud of

You don't need to include a photo unless you are specifically asked for one

List your relevant work experience, starting with the most recent first and work your way back

Your CV does not need to be labelled 'Curriculum Vitae' – the person reading it already knows it is a CV
