Industry Best Practices

The wellbeing and safety of everyone in our industry – from yard staff and breeders to students and employers – depends on clear, consistent, and compassionate workplace standards.

These resources are designed for trainers, stud managers, educators, and all employers within the Irish racing and breeding industry. They align with national legislation and best practice, while reflecting the realities of daily life in our workplaces.

Why These Resources Matter

Clear and consistent guidelines give structure and reassurance to everyone working in our industry. They help employers meet their legal obligations while embedding the values of safety, respect, and wellbeing that underpin Irish racing and breeding. Adopting these guidelines demonstrates a shared commitment to high standards of care.

Critical Incident STRESS MANAGEMENT Policy

This policy provides clear guidance on how to manage and support individuals and teams during and after a traumatic or high-stress incident. It outlines immediate response steps, communication procedures, and post-incident supports to help maintain safety, wellbeing, and business continuity.

Dignity at Work Policy

This policy promotes a culture where everyone is treated with courtesy, respect, and equality. It sets out clear procedures for preventing and addressing bullying, harassment, or discrimination, while encouraging open communication and early resolution. The policy supports both employers and employees in creating professional, inclusive, and positive working environments.

Child Safeguarding Policy

This policy ensures that all young people involved in our industry are protected, valued, and supported. Based on Children First legislation and TUSLA guidance, it provides practical steps for identifying and responding to concerns, appointing a Designated Liaison Person (DLP), and creating safe environments for under-18s participating in training, work experience, or employment.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing Guide for the Horse Breeding and Racing Sectors

This guide has been compiled to help all sectors of the Irish horse breeding and horse racing industry to comply with their health and safety obligations under the SHWW and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000, together with the Health and Safety (Consultation with Employees) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996. It is also designed to be used by anyone in the industry who has responsibility for health and safety, including all industry employees.

Employment Guide for Horse Breeding & Racing Sectors

This guide is a comprehensive resource of good employment practices produced in conjunction with the Workplace Relations Commission. The document comprehensively sets out and explains the responsibilities of employers and the rights of employees under various relevant legislation.
